GEDA and the landmarks of Tallinn

Ramirent and GEDA are supporting the renovation of the historic churches in Tallinn.

These structures dominate the skyline of the Estonian capital and are regarded as symbols of the economic and cultural centre. St Mary’s cathedral (Estonian: Tallinna toomkirik) and St Nicholas Church (Estonian: Niguliste kirik) are located directly at the Toompea hill. The 69 meter high cathedral with the baroque belfry was built in the 18th century. St Nicholas Church rises a little higher above the skyline of the old town: At 105 meters, it has been towering over the city since the 17th century and attracts thousands of tourists every year.

Securing the future

Buildings with a historic background like these are of crucial importance to a city like Tallinn. Of course they have to be constantly looked after and refurbished to retain the structures in the long term. The time-honoured churches are currently hidden behind scaffolding – the roof refurbishment of St Mary’s cathedral and a complex façade refurbishment on St Nicholas Church are in full swing. The new viewing platform and the lavishly refurbished interior of St Nicholas Church will certainly be a new highlight for visitors and tourists. The comprehensive work is carried out primarily by Tarrest LT OÜ in collaboration with Meisel Ehitus OÜ (on St Nicholas Church) and OMA Katused OÜ (on St Mary’s cathedral). These experienced and competent partners ensure a smooth and rapid progress of the refurbishment work.

Combined expertise – hand in hand

Work at dizzying heights has to be completed safely, quickly and reliably. The company Ramirent with its longstanding experience and wide selection of high quality hire equipment provided an ideal solution for this: a combination of scaffoldings and two transport platforms of type GEDA 1500 Z/ZP. These are scheduled to be in use until completion of the refurbishment work at the end of 2022.

The scaffolding height of around 65 m is similar for the different structures, as no changes will be made to the roof of St Nicholas Church.

A variety of challenges came together in these projects. Special anchorings were required on the historic façade in order to correctly transfer the occurring forces. The forces acting on the mast ties are immense here, due to the high wind loads and the challenging weather conditions in this coastal location. A special combination of anchors on the scaffolding and on the building was used for this project. Once again, the trusting cooperation between hire company Ramirent and construction and industrial hoist manufacturer GEDA from Germany paid off. Both companies are market leaders in their field and bring their extensive know-how to this project in order to get these historic monuments back into shape.

Up and away ...

Not only workers, but also all materials have to be transported up to a height of 65 m for the roof and façade refurbishment work. The transport platforms from GEDA are the strong partner for heavy loads and efficient working in the rough environment of construction sites. Whether new buildings or refurbishment projects – the unique quality and durability of original GEDA transport platforms are rated highly at construction sites worldwide. The many different platform versions with load capacities up to 3,700 kg allow for optimum and flexible use in virtually any construction project. The convenient modular construction provides for many different combination options. The B platforms with a size of 1.45 x 3.30 metres and a load capacity of 1,500 kg are used at the Estonian construction sites. These spacious platforms offer plenty of space for all types of construction materials, steel elements, construction waste, etc. Equipped with two separate control units, the devices can be used as a construction hoist for transporting only materials, but are also approved for transporting passengers. Despite the high load capacities, the proven mast system of the GEDA 1500 Z/ZP ensures stable and smooth running up to a height of 100 meters. With 12 m/min in passenger mode and 24 m/min in material mode, this transport platform guarantees rapid construction progress while ensuring optimum logistics at the construction site for installation of the scaffolding and for all subsequent work. For decades, GEDA has been setting standards in terms of both quality and safety. The GEDA 1500 Z/ZP transport platform, for example, is of course equipped with the usual safety equipment such as limit switches, speed-dependent safety gear, safety stop and overload protection. A wide range of hot-dip galvanized landing level safety gates provide for safe transfer between the platform and the respective landing level.

The automatic lubrication device, which ensures significantly lower wear on the gear rack and pinion, is included with the GEDA 1500 Z/ZP transport platform as a standard.

The GEDA transport platform range

Complex projects are under way not only in Estonia – the GEDA transport platform range is in use all over the world. From the GEDA 300 Z/ZP to the GEDA 3700 Z/ZP, the right device is available for any location and application. The GEDA 300 Z/ZP is ideal for installation with a small footprint. With a size of only 1.35 x 0.95 metres, this transport platform can even be installed in narrow passageways or on driveways. Thanks to the GEDA UNI-MAST system, the GEDA 500 Z/ZP can be installed directly from the transport platform in a smooth process. Various platform modules with different load capacities and sizes offer the right solution for any application. The GEDA 3700 Z/ZP is perfect for heavy loads and bulky goods. With a platform size of 5.00 x 2.90 metres and a maximum load capacity of 3700 kg or seven passengers (depending on the platform variant), this transport platform fully meets the requirements for higher load capacities.
