Statement on the accident with a GEDA-Multilift P12 on the university building in Newcastle, Australia, on 29 April 2014

During assembly work a car together with the topmost mast tipped over during the installation. The lower part of the car had jammed with the penultimate mast which prevented it falling down. The car which has an authorised 1,000 kg load capacity was transporting 3 people and no further loads.

We do not have an official accident report. However, based on the pictures we have been sent, we can clearly identity that the two screws on the mast facing away from the car were missing.

Back in the 1990s GEDA was the first company to develop a system to prevent travel operation on a fully-unscrewed mast. The mast on the GEDA Multilift P12 also has an overrun protection which prevents travel operation on a mast when the screws on the mast facing away from the car are missing.

However, in the above lift, this overrun protection was decommissioned so the integrated safety system could not identify this fault.

We advise all installers that the risks involved with the installation must always be taken into account. Please observe the assembly, installation and operating instructions delivered with the device and only use equipment that is in good technical condition. We would also like to point out that whilst lifts are being installed, they must also be secured accordingly during breaks and at the end of the working day to prevent any unauthorised usage.
