Prime residences in Downton Birmingham
Two GEDA Personnel and Material Hoists stand at the core of an exclusive housing project in Birmingham’s city centre
Right in the bustling centre of the English city of Birmingham, workers are currently busy to finalize a building that will provide highest living standards for its future tenants. St Martin’s Place is going to be the just the right place for those looking for an exclusive location with attractive services nearby. Only a few minutes from well-known districts like Arena Central, Brindley Place and Paradise, the building in Tennant Street will hold 228 luxury apartments for those with a fine taste. The state-of-the-art facilities of St. Martin’s Place were designed by famous Daniel Gibbons and offer comfort and elegance.
With hoists and cranes reaching up high into the sky, works at Tennant street are currently running at full speed. In order to meet tight project deadlines, the responsible company Colmore Tang Construction decided to use two personnel and material hoists, providing ideal logistics infrastructure for all contractors on site. Both hoists are GEDA Multilift P22 and on hire from Hoist Hire Services for the time of the project.
GEDA Multilift P22 – performance at highest standards
With use of the latest technology and a modern design, GEDA Multilift P22 represents the full set of experience and tested quality of the German manufacturer. For example, the full pre-installed base unit which is composed of a car, enclosure, flat cable bin and drive is delivered as one unit with perfect dimensions for container loading and for HGV transportation. Long assembly times are now a thing of the past, since the machine is ready to go once it is offloaded from the lorry.
The whole installation process is done from the easily accessible roof. The off-centre position of the trapdoor in the roof ensures an ergonomic working area. The new assembly cage is practical and useful. Its aluminium box is hooked onto the guard rail next to the mast and makes the assembly of the hoist, in combination with the usual assembly crane, considerably easier. In contrast to larger passenger hoists, the Multilift only requires a few square meters of floor space and does not require an additional concreted base plate.
With a maximum lifting speed of 54 m/min, the GEDA Multilift P22 transports materials with a weight of up to 2.000 kg or 22 people quickly and safely up and down.
The comfortable platform size of 1.40 x 3.20 x 2.10 m also allows the transport of bulky goods, such as plasterboards for interior work. With the full-width C-door on the side of the machine, loading can be done easily with forklifts and telehandlers.
The standard automatic control can be replaced by the even more user-friendly landing call box or a call control from the landing. The Premium version of the Multilift P22 (as per Hoist Hire Services Ltd hire fleet) comes with state-of-the-art technology and useful features, such as a diagnostic system, showing the exact location of the malfunction on the internal display. To reduce the wear on the toothed rack and pinion, the automatic lubrication device is included in the GEDA Multilift P22 as standard.
Ingenious flat cable system - easy transportation up to dizzy heights
The project at St Martin’s Place is proof that the use of GEDA P22 is worthwile also for lower building heights – both machines were installed to serve 32 meters. In lifting heights up to 50 metres, the cable is stored in the flat, space-saving cable bin. The patented GEDA flat cable system ensures the fast and safe transportation of people and materials with the Multilift P22 up to a height of 200 metres.
At construction projects from 100 metres height, the cable guided by the cable carriage, also patented, ensures reliable operation. Designed as a space-saving device, the carriage provides easy entry height at the lowest landing of only 450 mm. The GEDA cable carriage can also be opened so that the cable can be inserted easily and cleanly which means that awkward and protracted threading-through of the cable is consigned to the past.
It goes without saying that safety devices such as the limit switch, speed-dependent safety gear, safety stop and and overload protection are part of the standard Multilift P22 features provided. Extra safety is also provided by the newly developed collision protection of the lift with the cable carriage.
The team at Hoist Hire Service appreciates the long standing relationship they have been building up with the Bavarian hoist manufacturer GEDA: “The high quality of GEDA Multilift P22 hoists and the excellent technical support have made a very good impression on us and the customer on site. Our installer teams received their training and support during the installation of both machines directly from the manufacturer”, says Chris Douce, Technical & Compliance Manager at Hoist Hire Services.
To be able to finish facade works around the already installed hoists, the manufacturer GEDA also designed bespoke wall-floor-ties as anchors for both GEDA Multilift P22 hoists.
Completion in summer 2021
While having something to look forward to, future tenants will have to have a bit of patience still before they can move into the new premium apartments. Construction works at St. Martin’s Place will not be finalized before next year’s summer.
